Otto Octopus

Octopus plushia amabilis

The rockpool, low tide

Otto Octopus in the shallows

Specimen inspected at close range; correspondent inspected in return.

From the notebook

Eight arms, one opinion. It examined the lens, then me, then the lens again, and arrived at a conclusion I was not invited to hear.

I note that I have spent a career describing creatures that show no interest in being described. This one broke the pattern, and I find I do not mind being the specimen for a moment.

Archivist's note

The correspondent reports that he was, by his own account, examined. I have filed the record under the specimen regardless.
