Riviera Crab, sideways and unrepentant

Specimen examined at close range; correspondent kneeling, and regretting it.

From the notebook

A crab in three inches of water, doing what crabs do, which is to move confidently in a direction nobody asked about. I watched for some minutes before recording anything, on the grounds that it was better company than my notes.

Shell: warm. Claws: ornamental, in my judgement, though I did not test the hypothesis. Manner: brisk. Torquay has been photographed to death and observed rather less, and this is the sort of thing that has been waiting in it all along.
