Lutra plushia wyensis
The Wye below Hay, first light
Specimen mid-float; correspondent writing standing up, having sat down once already.
From the notebook
Otters are the only creatures I have catalogued that appear to be enjoying themselves on purpose. They had all but gone from English rivers by the 1970s and were back in every county by 2011, and this one floated past twice, the second time slower, which I take to be a lap of honour.
I recorded the river temperature, the light, and the precise moment I stopped taking notes and simply watched. The last of these is not, strictly, data. I have kept it in.
