Atlas Camel

Camelus plushia atlantis

The souk, mid-afternoon

Atlas Camel at the edge of the dunes

Specimen acquired; correspondent still working out how.

From the notebook

Found on a stall between the lamps and the slippers, wearing a blanket in a red I have not been able to match since. The negotiation lasted eleven minutes. I enjoyed losing it more than I have enjoyed winning most things.

Two humps, four feet, and the settled expression of something that has walked considerably further than I have. I asked where it came from and was told the Atlas, with a gesture that took in the whole horizon, which I have recorded verbatim as the native range.
