Bashful Otter

Lutra plushia verecunda

The riverbank, first light

Bashful Otter, mid-float

Specimen mid-float; correspondent writing standing up, having sat down once already.

From the notebook

Otters are the only creatures I have catalogued that appear to be enjoying themselves on purpose. This one floated past twice, the second time slower, which I take to be showmanship.

I recorded the river temperature, the light, and the precise moment I stopped taking notes and simply watched. The last of these is not, strictly, data. I have kept it in.
