Specimen notes: squat, weatherproof of expression, permanently unimpressed by drizzle. Ricky is the Society's most stoic amphibian — a broad green lump of a frog whose frown has consoled thousands.

What the Society noted

The Explorer

A broad green lump of a frog, weatherproof of expression and unimpressed by drizzle — the Society's most stoic amphibian. Does very little, consoles thousands; proof a specimen need not do much to earn its place.

Wonders of the real world

The real rain frog

Rain frogs walk rather than hop.

When alarmed, a Cape rain frog blows its body up into a ball.

The desert rain frog makes a high-pitched squeak when threatened.
